Development Services Department

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., five days a week, Monday to Friday inclusive and attendance at meetings as required.

$38.32 per hour, plus full benefit package.

Union Affiliation

Responsible for the performance of a variety of duties in the area of building and plumbing inspection, zoning and Official Community Plan uses.

The incumbent reports to the General Manager of Planning & Operations.


  1. Accepts permit applications.
  2. Checks plans for compliance with Building Codes, zoning requirements, building and associated bylaws.
  3. Discusses with design professionals the requirements of the building and related codes.
  4. Assists the public with land use, zoning, subdivision and building requirements.
  5. Keeps up to date on changes to all pertinent Codes.
  6. Monitors and inspects construction and demolition projects.
  7. Monitors the City for projects without permits.
  8. Prepares reports and information for Board of Variance and acts as secretary.
  9. Maintains drawing storage reference library.
  10. Issues building, demolition, sign and temporary permits.
  11. Inspects premises at business licence application stage to ensure compliance with Bylaws and Codes.
  12. Reviews and makes recommendations for amendments to Building and other associated bylaws.
  13. Makes recommendations for proceeding with court action when violations of codes and bylaws occur.  Assists with preparing evidence and appears in court when necessary.
  14. Other duties as may be assigned.
  1. Includes, but are not limited to the following:
  2. Shall be currently active in the field and have a minimum of five years experience in municipal building inspection.Level 3 Certificate with the Building Officials Association of British Columbia.
  3. Valid B.C. Driver's Licence, Class 5.
  4. Excellent report writing abilities.
  5. Shall have the ability to use a computer terminal to obtain related work information from data bank and enter, correct or update data bank information, as required.
  6. Shall have the ability to self motivate and to function with very minimal supervision.
  7. Ability to deal courteously, tactfully and diplomatically with people.
  8. Shall have the ability to work under pressure and on own initiative.
  9. Shall have the ability and skills to assist in the training of employees as required.
  10. Shall have the desire and initiative to undertake additional training courses for upgrading skills and abilities.

S&P/TSX Composite Index

The TSX stock exchange defines an index as a statistical measure of the state of the stock market, based on the performance of certain stocks. The performance of the index is typically viewed as a broad indicator of the direction of the economy. Originally known as the TSE 300 the composite index was created in 1977, with a base level of 1000 as of 1975. Through the years the index consisted of a sample of 300 companies, though the companies that comprised the index varied from year to year. Since May 2002 the number of companies has dropped from 300 to 212 as of November of 2003.
